Oral cavity cancer (mouth cancer) is cancer that affects the inside of the mouth.

Oral Cavity includes:

  • Lips
  • Gums
  • front two-thirds of the Tongue
  • Inner lining of the cheeks (buccal mucosa)
  • Bony Roof of the mouth (hard palate) 
  • Floor of the mouth (under the tongue)
  • area behind the wisdom teeth (retromolar trigone)

Oral cancer is the most common cancer in males in India.

Risk factors

  • Tobacco use of any kind, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and snuff
  • Chewing Betel quid (areca nut (betel nut), catechu, slaked lime wrapped in a piper betel leaf) and gutka
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Excessive sun exposure to your lips
  • A sexually transmitted virus called human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • A weakened immune system
  • family history of oral cancer
  • Hereditary conditions (Fanconi anemia, Li-Fraumeni syndrome)

  • A white or reddish patch on the inside of mouth
